ASA membership is open to anyone with an interest in the Nordic countries. As a member of ASA, you will receive our comprehensive newsletter about Scandinavian events taking place in the area; you can join us at our monthly speaker series to hear engaging lectures on topics related to the Nordic culture, history, politics; you can participate in our language meet-ups; and more.
The ASA monthly newsletter is the most comprehensive compilation of Nordic news and events in the National Capital area. It features information about ASA programs, Scandinavian activities and classes in and beyond our local area, and listings of Scandinavian film and TV programming. Members receive the newsletter 10 months of the year.
Members can enjoy ASA’s monthly speaker program, socialize with fellow members, and partake of the refreshments after the program. ASA draws on the cultural, professional, educational, and diplomatic resources of the National Capital area to provide eight stimulating lectures relating to the Nordic countries. The meetings are usually held on the second or third Monday of each month in Bethesda.
Nordic Christmas Festival
In December, ASA hosts a Nordic Christmas Festival featuring a St. Lucia pageant, dancing around the Christmas tree, a visit by Santa Claus, a performance by the Nordic Dancers, and a Nordic themed bazaar. Members pay a reduced admission fee for this event.
Around summer solstice in June, ASA, in collaboration with Drott Lodge, hosts a midsummer celebration featuring dancing around the May pole, games for the children, and a pot luck dinner.
ASA provides grants for cultural and educational programs (see grants page for more information).
Scandinavian Literature Group
Members can participate in ASA's Scandinavian Literature Group. The group meets most months that meetings are held. Books and meeting dates are published in the newsletter.
